Indonesia has one of the highest levels of disaster vulnerability in the world. Located on the Pacific Ring of Fire (an area with a high degree of tectonic activity), the country has to cope with the constant risk of volcanic eruptions, earthquakes, floods and tsunamis..
Pulau Nias has suffered several disasters and its people have withstood many tragedies, including the deaths of over 1,000 people in the March 2005 earthquake. Yayasan Holi'ana'a was deeply involved with the recovery efforts, both in the immediate aftermath and for many years afterwards. To this day, we continue our Disaster Risk Reduction education program in each project we run, helping to spread disaster mitigation strategies throughout the wider community.
